In Greek Mythology, a sphinx is represented with a head and breasts of a woman, the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle. The Sphinx is said to have asked a riddle of all travelers in order to allow them passage through the guarded entrance into the Greek city of Thebes. Those who answered wrongly were devoured.
In South India, it is said by tradition to take away the sins of the devotees when they enter a temple and to ward off evil in general. In Thailand. they are depicted as upright walking beings with the lower body of a lion or deer, and the upper body of a human. Often they are found as female-male pairs. The sphinx serves a protective function.
